Doctor consultations provide patients with the opportunity to discuss new or ongoing health concerns with a GP, receive a clinical assessment and examination where appropriate, and agree a personalised management plan.
GMS patients
Patients who hold a valid GMS medical card or doctor visit card are entitled to GP consultations free of charge for covered services. This means standard daytime GP visits are provided without a consultation fee at the point of care for eligible card holders.
Private patients
Private patients are seen on a fee-paying basis for standard GP consultations. The consultation fee covers the time spent with the doctor, clinical assessment, and any prescriptions, referrals or advice issued during that visit.
Review consultations
If a follow‑up review is needed for the same problem within a short period, a reduced consultation fee applies. This reduced review rate is available when patients are re‑assessed within two weeks for the same issue, supporting safe, continuous care while keeping costs manageable.
